BioEquip Transformer Project – a visionary response to the contemporary challenge of industrial sustainability.

The BioEquip project, integrated in WorkPackage 12 and part of the Produtech R3 agenda, presents itself as an audacious and visionary response to the contemporary challenge of industrial sustainability. Focusing on the development of innovative solutions for the extraction of bioactive compounds and the production of biocomposites from biomass, BioEquip covers the entire value chain essential to create the factories of the future, respecting the principles of energy efficiency and responsible waste management.

WorkPackage 12 is structured in several lines of action, starting with PPS 62, which is dedicated to the creation of a pilot line for the production of bioactive compounds and biocomposites.

This subproject involves the development and implementation of a line of ultrasonic reactors, promising faster and more efficient production of cellulose and curcumin nanocrystals.

At the same time, methods for quality control and production of biocomposites are being developed, integrating advanced sensing technologies, to ensure the highest standards of quality and food safety.

The activities of PPS 62 cover several phases, from the characterization of biomass to the optimization of production processes.

At the moment, the construction of equipment such as the extruder for biocomposites and the ultrasonic reactor is underway, with careful planning to ensure the validation of the technologies in an industrial context. In the context of PPS 63, called DigiUpdate, the proposal is to digitize and advance in the sensorization of composition equipment. This segment of the project aims to equip the extruders with modular tools that will allow real-time monitoring of the processed materials. Adopting an innovative approach with the use of optical spectroscopy and rheometry, PPS 63 also advances in the evaluation of the life cycles and sustainability of the new products produced within the scope of this project. In turn, PPS 64, called OZOHealth, focuses on the production of ozonated oils for the health and cosmetics industries. The project is developing a low-cost ozone generator, allowing the production of oils with diverse applications, from hospitals to alternative medicine clinics.

The construction of the ozone reactor is underway, along with studies that evaluate the social impact of the interventions carried out. BioEquip represents a firm commitment of the industry and the scientific community to innovation, sustainability and excellence. Through the integration of advanced technologies and process optimization, the project will enable the development of new products and solutions, fostering the creation of a favorable environment for circularity and promoting sustainable business models and continuous training on best practices. In this way, BioEquip is positioned as an essential pillar for the evolution of the Portuguese industry, aligning itself with the global goals of sustainable development and innovation.
